Statistics: What do they really mean?

     We've all run across statistics that do not tell the true story, or the story that we know.
I'm curious why schools tend to cater to the 1%ers.  You know the saying, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease."  It seems to me that the 1%ers are those that tend to make the most noise. Think about @realDonaldTrump  's campaign this summer. He is not predicted to win the nomination, but he is currently leading the Republican candidates. And, he has certainly been squeaky. 
     In education, the mandates tend to be about the GT crowd and the SPED crowd. Academic targets are based on advancing those students who can score advanced and nudging others closer to proficiency.  Neither of these groups is huge, but these two groups do tend to dictate time and resources spent in a school. I began to think about how a school decides what is best for the students.  Is it really based on statistics, or is it indeed based on a series of squeaky wheels?
     I've often worried about the regular student. You know, that student who can listen to directions, complete an assignment and easily make a B or C without much effort? It seems that schools have far more of these types of students. Shouldn't we as a nation be encouraging these students to do and achieve more with their lives?  I'm not saying that this issue is not being addressed, but I do know how easy it is to be a compliant student. What would it take for a community to realize that they have an untapped source of future leaders, inventors and creators?

How do we help our compliant students begin to squeak so that they can receive the dedicated attention that they truly deserve?

Inaugural Poetry Night

Inaugural Poetry Night at LISA North

As we approach our first Poetry Night, hearts are fluttering.   Our students are nervous to present their poetry, and out teachers are nervous about attendance. Since it is our first attempt to showcase our student's work, we  have also set up a LISA North Poetry Channel on Youtube so that the students and parents and view our students' efforts.

We will continue to add to our poetry channel each year.

The Struggle is Real- threefold statement on leadership

As an instructional leader, I am perpetually looking for knowledge to inspire, to teach, and to broaden my current perspective. I am also personally interested in the quiet work of The Elders.  Many teachers are interested in social justice.  As our public school populations continue to shift, it is imperative that we understand our students' backgrounds and the walls of prejudice they face daily.  Chair of the Elders, Kofi Annan's statement on leadership is fourfold. These three points can guide current and future #teacherleaders

1.  Be open and willing to listen
2.  Need not always be right
3.  A good follower

BE OPEN. To be open is to understand that all of our teachers have brilliant ideas. We must be willing to listen to these ideas. Teacher leaders must also be open to the restrictive policies of our schools. Teacher leaders must guide teachers and administrators. Often, administrators see the bigger picture.
